One of the most relaxing parts of any house is a window seat. It’s not reserved for bay or bow windows alone, but having such windows can help set the tone early and reduce the work you have to do to make the bench a reality.
As experts in roof repair, remodeling, window replacement and many other home needs, All States Home Improvement has the experience, professionalism and tools to fulfill your home’s needs. We may also have a word or two to offer in terms of exterior and interior design. In this post, we would like to share some ideas for creating the perfect nook right next to your favorite window.
Cushion or No Cushion?
That entirely depends on your preferences, but a cushioned bench is always the more comfortable choice. To create the perfect cushion, however, you need a seamstress that can make the right measurements as well as give you advice on the type of material to use for the cushion. The wrong material may sag too soon, so it’s better to shop around for something of quality. As for going without a cushion, you can always soften the spot a bit with some throw pillows. It’s easier and cheaper to accomplish, too.
Colorful or Monotone?
A more sophisticated sofa look almost always works well with matching pillow and cushion colors. For a more fun vibe, though, multicolored pillows are a good option. Mix and match according to a color scheme you’re comfortable with. It’s advisable to use a neutral cushion fabric color if you’re the type that gets tired of looking at the same thing for a long time. You can switch from matching colors to multicolored patterns whenever you want.
No Window Seat?
If the bench is not available at all, you can still create one to make use of the area right beneath your windows. With a little creativity, a tape measure and matching furniture, you can create a window seat. Just make sure the furniture (probably low drawers or cabinets) can carry a person’s weight. To create the final look, have a woodworker customize a wood panel for the bench right on top of the furniture.
Double-Duty?
While we’re on the subject of drawers and cabinets, you can also customize the window bench to double as a storage area. If there is limited space to open a drawer or a cabinet under the seat, build the seat with a flip-up top. You can also try using the space underneath the bench to cover a radiator. For this, you may need a professional to do the work or some advice to make sure it doesn’t become a fire hazard, and that it has enough ventilation to release the radiator’s heat. It should also provide easy access for servicing.
The best part about making a window seat is that it’s a relatively inexpensive home improvement project, and it can make your home look and feel more welcoming and comfortable.
