Why Is My Roof Leaking? A Guide to A Leaky Roof

Leaky roofs can be caused by many issues, from poor installation to damaged shingles. It’s important to find the root cause of your leak before you can start to repair it.

In this blog you’ll learn how to not end up like this:

Some leaks go completely unnoticed and cause significant damage without you even knowing about it. Once a year you’ll want to have a professional come and scope out the condition of your roof especially after a big storm.

If you’re wanting to learn how to prevent a leak to save you from future headaches, make notes of these following items:

Common roof leak issues:

  1. Poor Installation: If your roof wasn’t installed correctly, it may be prone to leaks. This could be caused by improper flashing, or a lack of sealant around the edges. It’s important to hire a professional roofer to make sure that your roof is installed correctly.
  2. Age: Over time, the elements can take a toll on your roof. If your roof is old, there’s a chance that it may be weaker in certain areas or that shingles may have cracked or become loose. This can cause water to seep into your home. If your roof has not been replaced in over 20 years, it’s time for a new one.

If you’re dealing with these two factors, you need to look into a full roof replacement. Not sure how much that costs? Get a free estimate here.

  1. Damaged Shingles: Strong storms, high winds, and hail can all cause damage to your shingles, leading to leaks. Living in Kansas we experience these conditions on the regular and it’s important to inspect your roof for any signs of damage. If you have storm damage learn more about what to do next.
  2. Clogged Gutters: If your gutters aren’t cleaned regularly, they can become clogged with leaves, sticks, and other debris. This can cause water to back up and leak into your roof, leading to leaks.
  3. Poor Ventilation: Poor ventilation can also lead to roof leaks. If your roof isn’t properly ventilated, it can lead to a buildup of moisture, which can cause the roof to rot and eventually lead to leaks.

Once you know why your roof is leaking, you can take the necessary steps get it fixed and ensure that your home is safe and secure.

Instantly Upgrade the Look of Your Home In 2023 With New Window Replacement

“There’s a world out there. Open a window, and it’s there,” – Robin Williams.

What do health & new windows have in common?

Before we get into how new windows improve the look of your home – what about how new windows improve your health? When you think of becoming healthier, you mostly think of the typical goals of working out more and eating better. And given that it’s the new year, health is a major theme. But have you considered natural light as part of improving your health? Studies show that increasing access to natural light improves your mood and helps reset your circadian rhythm (the natural process regulating the sleep-wake cycle).

Windows create beautiful natural light in your home, help clean the air, make you feel connected to nature; the list of health benefits can go on! Now more than ever, new windows should be a priority for your home and health.

Upgrade the look of your home

Sometimes a little paint, new blinds and curtains could be enough to give your home a facelift. But consider the last time your home has gotten a real window upgrade. If it’s been more than 15 years, it’s definitely time for new ones. Window replacement is one of the most noticeable improvements (from the interior, exterior, and health-wise) you can make to your home. New windows that bring in lots of bright natural light can completely transform a space and give the illusion of your room being bigger than it actually is.

Save money in the long run

Windows are a fantastic investment in making your house look good while decreasing the cost of your energy bills. Energy-efficient windows reduce heat loss and improve the comfort of your home. The US Department of Energy estimates that approximately 30% of energy in the average home is lost due to inefficient windows and doors. Make your home more energy efficient, keep drafts out, and keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

4 Attainable Home Improvement Goals for Your Roof for The New Year

Start 2023 off right by making your home a priority. Investing in your home and setting goals for your home life is a great way to boost your mood, energy, and create a sense of balance in everyday life. You spend so much time in your home you might as well make it a space that you love and feel warm and safe in.

Whether you set goals for your home, health, or career, make sure your goals are achievable and that you have a plan on how you’ll reach them. Spend the beginning of this year planning and checking off these roof home improvement goals you’ve maybe been procrastinating on.

Here’s our list of easy home improvement goals for your roof for the new year:

1. Check roof for any leaks or loose shingles

Your roof goes through a lot of wear and tear throughout the years so when you aren’t staying on top of the maintenance, leaks or damaged shingles are bound to occur. Take a walk around the outside of your house and see if you notice any buckled or curled shingles. Leaks will cause moisture running down the sides of your house or on your ceiling. If you have an attic, go up and investigate the area for any water damage.

2. Assess roof after winter storm

A good rule of thumb to follow in 2023, especially during the winter season, is to assess your roof right after a big winter storm. Inclement weather can really take a toll on your roof, especially if it’s old or lower quality. Try to make it a habit when every time there is a storm, snow, rain, hail, to check for any damage to your roof. Look for granules in your gutter – this could be a sign of loose shingles or problem areas on your roof.

3. Get a roof inspection

When owning a home in Kansas you are no stranger to harsh weather that wreak havoc on your roof. But climbing up on your roof yourself can be extremely dangerous if you are not experienced. Go the extra mile on seeing how your roof is holding up by scheduling a professional roof inspection. During our free roof inspection, we will assess any damage by looking for cracks around the chimney, leaks under shingles, and other signs of troubling issues.

To the untrained eye your roof may look fine at first. But our team of skilled roofers will check your roof in detail and provide a full written report of our findings.

If you aren’t sure is your need a roof replacement read about the 4 why’s for a new roof.

Tips To Maintain the Exterior of Your House This Winter

Here are a few simple tasks you can do to help maintain and extend the overall life and look of your house. Some want that quick fix, to hang up Christmas lights and call it good. You don’t just want your house to look pretty with lights at night but be proud of your home in the daylight too. Owning a home is a big investment that you want to keep in good condition year after year.

Keep up regular maintenance on your Wichita, Kansas home this winter

Owning a home is a big responsibility and investment, and you want to keep it looking nice. If you perform regular maintenance on your home, not only will it look better but investing in maintenance now, will avoid larger expensive repairs in the future. The last thing you want is for an issue to go unnoticed and have it snowball into a major expense.

Stay ahead of the winter storms this year by preparing your home for the chilly season. Ice, sleet, snow, wind, moister, etc. can cause significant damage to your home. Follow these tips to keep your home looking good and staying warm during and after this holiday season.

Keep your siding clean

Take the time to go around the outside of your house and inspect your siding and how it’s holding up. Look for cracks, swelling, rot, mold or separations in your siding. If you see any of those listed, call or contact All States to get a free consultation.

If you have recently installed vinyl siding or James Hardie Fiber Cement siding then you’re in luck. Both sidings require minimal monthly maintenance. If dirt or debris begins to build upon its surface, all it takes is a hose and a damp cloth and your vinyl siding will look factory fresh once again.

Check that your windows are working efficiently

Open your windows, clean, and wipe down the cracks and crevasses. This can make sure your windows fully close to keep the cold air out and the warm heat in. This is also a good time to make sure all your window seals are still in place and functioning correctly. Close and lock your windows to make sure they are secure for the winter. If you are experiencing a draft or moisture in the window, it’s probably time to invest in new windows.

Double-check that the area around your window and windowsill is clear. This will prevent from any outside moister latching on to anything inside your home that could cause internal damage.

Is your roof in good shape?

Who are we kidding, December isn’t a time to prepare for inclement weather, it’s to prepare for the guy in the big red suit to come down your chimney. But take a little time to look at your roof, while hanging those lights, or schedule an inspection to look for rust, missing, broken, or curling shingles. If you believe your roof is damaged contact us for a free consultation.

You should be checking your roof and gutters every few months. Once the leaves are off the trees, that’s a good indicator to check your roof, gutters, and downspouts. Granules in the downspouts can be a sign your roof needs repair. Clear out any leaves and debris to prepare for the heavy winter storms so everything can drain properly. Gutters that are backed up cause overflowing that then leads to water draining down your home – eventually leading to the deterioration of your home’s exterior. It can also lead to deterioration of your foundation, water infiltration in the basement, and settling on your porches, patio, and walkways.

Get your house ready for the cold

Prepare your home for winter, hanging Christmas lights, or even Kris Kringle. Whatever suits you, follow these steps to get your home ready for what this winter season shall bring! Let our family at All States Home Improvement help make your family home more beautiful, comfortable, and valuable.

What Not to Do When Buying New Windows

When investing in replacement windows you want to make sure you’re making a smart financial decision. Experts at All States Home Improvement can guide you and answer questions you may have during the entire process. Whether you are browsing different options or needing to replace a broken window, we can be a helpful resource to you.

If you’re a first-time homeowner or have never had to buy them before, we made a list of common mistakes people make when shopping for new windows. Follow these what-not-to-do rules and set yourself up with new windows that will last 50 years or more.

Buying the cheapest option for your new windows

We understand that this type of purchase can be costly but it’s important to buy good quality windows. If you are seeking out the cheapest window option you can find, it may be best to not replace your windows. Keeping the windows you currently have will be a cheaper option for you than making a costly mistake of replacing them with cheaper quality ones. There is a reason you are looking for new windows and you want that purchase to be an upgrade from what you currently have in your home.

Cheaply made windows can leak, build up moisture and let drafts into your home, causing your energy bill to skyrocket and needing you to replace them sooner than you would have hoped. Just because you got a good deal doesn’t mean you are getting a quality product that you will be happy with. You want a window that is energy efficient, looks good, and lasts for years.

Other companies who try to sell you their cheapest option will most likely do an unprofessional job when it’s time for the installation process. Here at All States Home Improvement, we are experts in our field. We are thorough in our installation process from start to finish, you can trust us to get the job done right.

To know if you’re getting quality windows consider purchasing windows that have certifications like Energy Star, AAMA Gold label, and The NFRC label.

Ignoring your energy bill for your home

Having your energy bill be automatically paid for and never looking back at past bills is a big mistake when it comes to owning a home. Dig out your past bills, compare them, and see if they have steadily increased. Has your bill increased each summer or winter? If so, your home may need new windows. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that windows account for 30% of heating and cooling energy loss.

Replacing one window at a time to save money

Staggering the window replacement process can be inefficient and disruptive. We can install new windows in a home with up to 10 windows in one to two days. All States Home Improvement recognizes that replacing all your windows can be expensive, so we offer financing options with payments starting at $98/month.

Do not DIY window replacement

We do not suggest replacing windows yourself. It takes a very skillful carpenter to install new windows correctly. You want your windows to be fully insulated around the window to eliminate drafts, have the seal correctly installed and for a perfect fit. Gain peace of mind with warranty protection on your new windows when using a skilled and trained window installer. Proper installation keeps your home and family safe from outside elements so make sure to use a skilled and experienced professional.

All States Home Improvement is your trusted source for quality window replacement

When you need replacement windows in Wichita KS, you can turn to All States Home Improvement- the leading local source for replacement windows since 1992. We are deeply experienced in the installation of windows in local homes, having worked with two generations of families to improve their homes through window replacement. We offer a wide selection of window styles and will work with you to choose the right fit for your home.

Convert Your Bathroom this Winter to Improve Accessibility

The holidays: it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Lights are aglow all around us, people are overflowing with joy, and everything has a little bit more sparkle than the preceding months. We spend the time reconnecting with family members we’ve lost touch with when life was too hectic the rest of the year. This holiday season, did you find yourself recognizing that your parents aren’t getting around quite as well as they did last year? Or maybe as you’re reading this you’re thinking that you’ve lost a bit of your agility these past several months.

Inevitably, we all will lose a bit of mobility as we age, and we are all looking to age with independence and dignity. More recently, retirees are choosing to forgo facilities equipped with accessible living spaces. Instead, the elderly are opting to “age in place.” This concept is defined as the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. While the “aging in place” trend is a much more desirable way to spend one’s later years in life, the family home is often not prepared for this stage in life. Though there are many rooms in a house that may need renovations for better accessibility, one crucial area to invest in is the bathroom.

How to Equip Your Bathroom For Aging In Place

According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 78,000 people are sent to hospitals each year due to injuries occurring from bathing or showering. In addition to the tub or shower, the toilet also poses a substantial risk for those less sprightly. As quoted in a New York Times article, Judy A. Stevens, an epidemiologist with the CDC, said, “Injuries getting on and off the toilet are quite high in people 65 and older. Having grab bars by the toilet would be helpful for people in their older years, and everyone would benefit from having grab bars both inside the tub or shower and where you get in and out.”

Because bathrooms pose the most potential risks for injury, renovating your bathroom will give you peace of mind that you, or your parents, are ready to age in place with grace. Read on to learn where to focus your efforts on your bathroom transformation.

Bathtub and Shower Conversions

Bathing should be a relaxing, rejuvenating experience. However, for the elderly, it can be fraught with anxiety due to the potential for injuries. Many homes are equipped with traditional shower/bath combos because of their versatility. However, because the top of the tub is typically nearly two feet off the ground, they are not ideal for people with limited mobility. Difficulty maneuvering in and out of the tub, combined with wet surfaces, makes it extremely dangerous.

The most common update for an accessible bathroom is converting a shower/tub combo to a walk-in shower. These showers are built to be easy to walk or roll into, so the chances for tripping are minimal. Though risks are reduced, it is essential to install grab bars in the shower as well in case of slipping on the wet floor. Often, it is easier for people with fatigue to sit while they bathe. Therefore, installing a no-slip chair or bench will be a welcome addition. Don’t forget to replace the existing showerhead with a removable, handheld showerhead that will reach the bench or chair.

Many people simply enjoy the luxury of a warm bath filled with essential oils and bubbles. If you find yourself cringing at the thought of being stuck with showers for the rest of your life, a walk-in tub might be a great compromise. Though they come with a higher price tag, they are well worth the investment for avid bubble bath enthusiasts.

Toilet Modifications

Most bathrooms have somewhat similar toilets, with only small differences in color or shape. However, for people facing difficulties getting in and out of chairs, a taller, more accessible toilet would be ideal. Weaker muscles make it challenging to lower oneself to sit or lift to stand, so installing grab bars around the toilet is a vital component of any bathroom conversion.

Other Areas to Consider for Accessibility

  • Doorway: you may need to widen it to allow for a wheelchair or walker to make it through with ease. If you think this may be the case at some point, it’s best to do it as part of the whole bathroom renovation rather than waiting for a second alteration.
  • Flooring: no-slip mats are the quickest and easiest way to make a bathroom safer. There are also several permanent no-slip flooring options if you are interested in making the investment.
  • Sink: unless you need to convert countertop heights for a wheelchair, the bathroom sink often is overlooked for accessibility. Though the sink likely doesn’t pose much risk, there are still ways to make it more user-friendly for people with arthritis. For example, switching traditional knobs out for lever handles are more comfortable to turn on and off for aching joints.

Function Can be Fashionable

We know, when you hear “accessible bathroom,” you instantly picture a sterile, unattractive space as you’ve seen in hospital rooms. We’re here to tell you that accessibility can be beautiful as well as functional. Our team will work with you to design comfortable, attractive spaces to keep you safe.

It’s best to make accessibility alterations before you need them, so your home is ready when you are. Life is full of unexpected events, so having a fully-accessible bathroom will put your mind at ease. Whether it’s an unforeseen surgery, an unfortunate accident, or merely the uncomfortable symptoms of aging, an updated bathroom will keep you safe at home regardless of physical limitations.
