5 Tips to Keep Your Home Cool This Summer

Summer is here! That means the heat is here too. To make sure you and your house are well prepared for the extreme heat, we’ve combined some easy tips for you to keep your house cool. Ever walk by a window and feel that hot air coming in? Or are you struggling to keep your home at the perfectly cool temperature you like? It’s important to us that our community knows the best practices to keeping the inside of your home at a comfortable temperature. These tips not only keep your house cool but can save you tons on your monthly energy bill.

Make sure your windows are locked – not just closed

Locking the windows during the hot summer hours of the day can be game changing when it comes to preventing the hot heat from getting through. It may seem obvious but locking the window seals the window completely. If you only shut the windows, you are likely leaving open a little space that can cause big issues to keep your home the temperature you like. This prevents any draft from coming through your window and no one wants that hot heat getting inside.

Open windows during the cool parts of the day

In contrast to our first tip, opening your windows can actually help cool down your house. The key is to only open the windows at night or in the early morning when the temperature is the lowest. Doing this pushes the hot are out of your home – leading to a cooler more comfortable environment.

Simply opening your windows helps increase air circulation inside your home. The breeze naturally ventilates your rooms and pushes the hot indoor air out. Of course, the extent of this benefit depends on the number of windows in a room and what direction they’re facing.

Close your shades

Again, this tip may seem obvious, but the difference can be night and day to how the inside temperature of your house feels. If you don’t have shades or blinds the summer sun is just cooking the inside of your home – causing your energy bill to skyrocket, and no one wants that. Consider getting blinds or shades if you don’t already have them.

Turn off any unused lights

Have you ever started sweating while getting ready in a bathroom because of the big hot bright lights? We aren’t saying to use the bathroom with the lights off but that’s an example of how turning off unused lights can really keep your home cool. Not only will this tip save you money, but it will drastically cool down your house.

Our deep roots in the communities that have supported us for so long have helped us to gain a firm understanding of the needs and expectations of our neighbors. Our goal is to be a helping hand and to make your home as energy efficient as possible and with these small tips, like turning off your bathroom lights, we can guarantee that you will notice a big difference in the temperature of your home.

If none of these are working for you… it may be time for some new windows.

Here at All States Home Improvement, we install top of the line Elements windows that utilize advanced glass to ensure both durability and energy efficiency. Say goodbye to that hot draft from those brutal summer winds. In the summer they need to be leak-free, keeping costly conditioned air in and the exterior heat out.

Andale Siding Before & After

All States Home Improvement went out to Andale on a James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding project. These homeowners trusted the All States team for new siding and they couldn’t be happier with the results.

This home originally had pressed wood material for their siding, and it needed some major TLC.

Some issues All States Home Improvement found with their old siding:

(Make note of these issues and check if your siding is showing any of these signs to be replaced)

  • Swelling around the nails
  • Swelling on the bottom edges of the siding
  • It wasn’t holding paint very well
  • Decay

If you see where it’s starting to decay – that’s a major issue that needs to be addressed. Siding rots from the backside out. So, when you can visibly see it from the outside of your home the issue has been developing for a while before it was visible. People think it’s the start of the issue but it’s really the very end. It happens very rapidly, where the siding looks decent one year to looking terrible the next.

For this customer we did new house wrap and siding. Some key benefits to house wrap are that it keeps water and air from penetrating into the wood structure which causes damage – keeping your house more energy-efficient.

It allows your house to breath and prevents condensation from things like the dishwasher, washing machine, etc. from building up and causing damage. It allows vapor to escape but prevents moisture from coming in from the outside.

We use a James Hardie cement siding and tape to create an air and watertight seal. These products are extremely durable, one of things our customers love about siding from All States Home Improvement.

Mix Siding Styles

Believe it or not, green siding is seeing a significant uptick in 2022. Perhaps it’s everyone’s desire to be in tune with nature, or maybe it’s attributed to our search for a more sustainable future. No matter your reason, a shade of green will offer a trendy update to your home’s exterior.

You Can’t Go Wrong With White

No matter your home’s exterior appearance, a black and white paint combo is a great choice. White with black accents is unique in that it is both classically traditional and undeniably modern. Add flair with a bright red or bold wood-toned door and beautiful landscaping!

Try Two-tone

Are you willing to be a little adventurous? Then try mixing colors when painting your home! Keep it simple with a monochromatic color scheme with slight color variations, or be daring with something dramatic like blue and yellow. Either way, a two-toned home is sure to make a statement!

Choose Cheery with Yellow

Nothing offers a friendly “welcome home” like cheery yellow siding. Whether you choose something bright and bold or muted and pastel, yellow pairs perfectly with white accents and a brightly colored door.

Be Classically Cool with Gray

Oh, the many shades of gray! The spectrum of gray options is practically endless. From light to dark, cool to warm, and slight tones of blue or green, you will have your work cut out for you choosing your perfect shade! 5 Reasons to Upgrade to a Walk-in Shower

5 Reasons to Upgrade to a Walk-in Shower

You can’t watch a home renovation show without seeing a walk-in shower feature. They’re modern and add a custom touch to a bathroom, so it’s no surprise that they’re at the top of the renovation list for many homeowners.

The reasons to upgrade your master bath with an elegant walk-in shower are endless, but we’ve rounded up our top five benefits of these luxurious modern home additions. Whether you’re looking for better accessibility in your master bath or a more modern aesthetic in a small guest bath, you can’t go wrong with a custom walk-in shower from All States Home Improvement. Read on to learn more!

  1. Better Accessibility

Bathing is often the most relaxing part of our days. However, it is often less than rejuvenating for those with mobility issues if they are forced to bathe in a shower/tub combo. While many homes are equipped with traditional shower/bath combos because of their versatility, the top of the tub is typically nearly two feet off the ground, making them problematic for people with limited mobility. Difficulty maneuvering in and out of the tub, combined with wet surfaces, can make bathing extremely dangerous for this segment of the population.

The most common update for an accessible bathroom is converting a shower/tub combo to a walk-in shower. These showers are built to be easy to walk or roll into, so the chances for tripping are minimal. Therefore, if you or someone in your home is looking for a more accessible bathroom, a walk-in shower is a good place to start. Read this blog about converting your bathroom for better accessibility for more information on how to improve your bathroom’s accessibility features.

  1. Resale Value

When placed in the right room, a walk-in shower will increase the value of your home. They make smaller bathrooms look bigger and leave room for more features in a small guest bath (see more about that in reason five!). Keep in mind, however, that you may want to keep at least one bathtub in one bathroom in your home to keep resale value high for buyers with children, who will likely want at least one bath for bathing their kiddos.

  1. Appearance

Modern, functional, and versatile are three words that perfectly describe walk-in showers. No matter your design aesthetic, the team at All States Home Improvement will design a beautiful shower to fit your space. Your consultant will share a wide variety of colors and designs to fit your style from traditional, to elegant to farmhouse.  And don’t forget the accessories!  Whether you’re looking for a spa-like rainfall showerhead or something handheld, shelving, benches or even a shaving ledge, we have the expert know-how and experience to guide your decisions and match your unique preferences.

  1. Easier to Clean & Durable

All States bath products are made of non-porous acrylic panels for the most durable and easy to maintain option on the market. No tile or grout to clean or maintain, no mold or mildew and our shower panels have an antimicrobial surface that stops the growth of bacteria. Cleaning your custom walk-in shower will be much quicker and easier. No tile, grout or porous porcelain surfaces that hold in grime and bacteria. Additionally, because our walk-in shower consists of flat surfaces, with reinforced corners – there are fewer nooks and crannies to catch buildup, slashing your cleaning time.

  1. Conserve Space

Walk-in showers are built to fit the room, so you don’t have to work with standard size templates. Therefore, you can add a shower to a room that couldn’t hold a shower/tub combo. Another option is to replace a combo unit with a smaller walk-in shower to create space for a nice vanity area in your bathroom!  Completing your new walk-in shower with a frameless shower door or an elegant glass wall will make the room appear larger than it is, adding value to your home.
